A tale of two victories

So the “frequent updates” yesterday didn’t all work out as well as planned, but Michigan pretty much took care of things through the end, and Bowling Green again played well, but still found themselves in a dogfight with an undermanned team (Although FIU has speed coming out their ears and is a lot farther along than most 4-year old D1 programs should be.) A huge game for Jarret Sanderson, two picks (including the clincher in the endzone at the gun) and a fumble return for touchdown.

As for the rest of the day in college football, the magnitude of some wins Saturday, and just the number of ranked teams playing each other will no doubt make the BlogPoll a crafty affair. At least FSU and Miami can tumble together once again, with no spotlight on which overrated team sits on top of the other. Tennessee should also see its hype simmer quite a bit. How much stock is put in Michigan’s dominating performance from non-Big Ten voters will be interesting. If I were to fire a ballot off the top of my head, I’d probably see a top five including Ohio State, USC, then Auburn/Michigan/Florida in no particular order, but we’ll see how it shakes down when I actually start dragging teams around.

All in all, some great finishes, with Oregon/Oklahoma, Clemson/FSU, Tennessee/Florida (I thought for sure Mrs. Meyer’s hubby was about to pull another road loss out of his hat), and the bonus “thriller” as I got home from work, settled in to find a West Coast game on FSN, and when that wasn’t there running into the last 1:30 of Army falling 2 yards short against A&M. I didn’t watch any other part of that game, but I just felt horrible for Army as they had first and goal from the 2 with :22 left and one timeout. An understandable draw on first down got a little bit, a near disaster after a timeout on second down was incomplete. Nine seconds left inside the A&M 2, I figured they’d either run a QB draw on 3rd down, putting all their cards on the table, or throw on third and run if necessary on 4th down with probably four or so seconds left. They ran on third, but took it wide and the play never had a chance.

This was my first Saturday to channel surf college football this season, and I have to say I wasn’t disappointed. At all. (Especially by that little contest in South Bend.)
