Pass the dutchie

With spring practice starting tomorrow for BG’s football team, what better way to kick things off with some drug arrests? I don’t know what to expect out of Ryan Patrick, but this was Anthony Turner’s year to kick some MAC tail. He was ridiculously well-recruited out of Dayton (turning down an offer, or at least heavy drunken advances, from Iowa to come to BG), sat in Omar Jacobs’ 6’6″ shadow for a year and a half, then disappointed a few folks when he took over the reins after Jacobs suffered a shoulder injury last year. People wanted to give him time, which is cool. The offense last year was set up for Omar, not for the more run-friendly Turner. Give them time to work the offense around him and let’s roll.

Apparently, he has taken the “let’s roll” part to heart. Heaven forbid I speak against college kids and the hippie lettuce, especially in and around the city of Bowling Green, but sitting in a car outside a dorm and toking up? C’mon guys, that’s just being so irresponsibly irresponsible it’s ridiculous. The most interesting part of the story appears to be Patrick, who came out naming names of other players who were smoking with them earlier. What is that? The transfer cornerback, who has yet to be issued a jersey most likely, and can’t even play this year anyway, is a narc? I’m thinking if I’m him, I’m locking, double locking, and putting a dresser in front of the door of my bedroom anytime I even think of sleeping.

As for punishment, who knows? Even with the “social seriousness” of the crime, where does it rank in terms of “Booker Stanley having to sit out two practices for hitting a chick and going ‘Nam on some dude’s forehead?” Or are we better than Wisconsin? Interestingly enough, more than a few people are high on redshirt freshman Freddie Barnes as the next QB after Turner. Could the competition just have gotten a little more interesting? If Barnes is what they say he is, I can think of a few things worse than having someone with four years of eligibility left running the show. (Although Turner is just a redshirt sophomore, so that might be a bit of a wash.)

On the bright side…uh, I guess…we’re on the board for the Fulmer Cup!
