Crime and “Punishment”

Another week passes by and again the legal team of the Baltimore Ravens have worked wonders. While I admit, I wasn’t exactly in the courtroom for this event, but Ravens cornerback Corey Fuller was acquitted this week of running a gambling ring inside his home. This after the police raided said home, and caught Fuller with shoeboxes full of money and concealed weapons, after reports of Fuller threatening people for money that they owed him. From gambling. I’m not convinced that Brian Billick or Ed Reed could walk away from a freshly robbed bank with Richard Nixon masks and carrying canvas bags with big green dollar signs on them, and he’d walk free. It’s amazing, and I’m jealous.

The downside of Michigan suspending Daniel Horton for going Ike Turner on his girlfriend is a blowout loss to a horrible Purdue team. The upside is that it cues Ohio State athletes to trump it. While nothing will likely outdo Ed Martin handing out the GNP of Belize to anyone that stepped into Crisler Arena in baggy shorts from 1991-99, OSU’s jocks have always seem to come back strong. Nothing like a good rivalry. And if anyone can top Albert Dukes, they get a free car.

Not to be outdone, we step down to the high school level. Cleveland high schooler Ray Williams gets convicted of involuntary manslaughter, yet this week he’s expected to accept a football scholarship to the University of Toledo. Involuntary manslaughter. He was given five years probation, though he could have received 20 years in prison. Which begs the question, if Chris Weinke could play baseball for 5 or 6 years right out of high school and then decide he wanted to play college football, could Williams declare as a freshman after 20 years in the state pen? I guess we’ll never know, but in a day and age where they worry about students keeping their GPA above 1.1 (except Reggie Germany, you little overachiever you!), a university is openly welcoming a convicted felon? Congratulations, Toledo, you win.

  1. I’ve been trying to find info about Utoledo’s offer to Ray Williams. Any suggestions (i.e. : newspapers, recruitment archives?)
