In England, they pronounce it “soccer”

In an early afternoon of incredibly “meh” Big 10 games, there were two pretty solid two-minute drills to end the half. Purdue got inside the Northwestern two after going 80+ yards in 1:20 and kicked a field goal to go up 7, and Indiana marched a little shorter distance in about 35 seconds before some freshman nailed a 46-yarder. It was so impressive, Pam Ward’s voice ALMOST went up an octave.

Unfortunately, the Big 10 game that showed some kind of promise, Minnesota at Wisconsin, has turned into a whoopin’ faster than Booker Stanley at a keg party. And it’s from this game that we get our “annoyingly incorrect cliche of the week”. During a break in the third quarter, Chris Spielman, genius commentator that he is, commented about Wisconsin not having Ohio State on their schedule, so they “control their own destiny.”

Of course, this is true, in the sense that we ALL control our own destiny in some way, but considering Wisky has a loss to undefeated Michigan on their schedule, it seems like the Wolverines control a good portion of Badger destiny.

Since I never got to it last week, I’m also tired of the cliche, “it was a perfect setting for an upset.” Especially when two fairly even teams matchup on the so-called underdog’s home field. Certainly there are some situations that are upset-ready more than others, but it just doesn’t make sense.

In the time it took me to type that last paragraph, I made 20 bucks. With a semi-drunken call from the tailgate scene at BGSU (where I really should have called in sick to be at today), I get asked what year Tim Biakabutuka rushed for 313 yards on Ohio State. Any U-M fan worth their salt and most OSU fans can recite that year without thinking twice. Fortunately, Rod found one that couldn’t and I’m (theoretically) 20 bucks richer.

Speaking of BG, it’s only EMU today, but they’ve had their troubles in the Doyt of late, so it could be a nervous afternoon. I think, however, the Falcons are riding some kind of confidence, and have had their defense step up the past couple weeks (despite giving up 35 to Ohio State), and should win this one going away.
