I think the brown and orange euphoria might be wearing off.
A whole lot of Bowling Green-related things went down today (okay, three of them that I can think of), and maybe it’s just the cold/flu and the drugs I took because of it, but I think I almost felt a bit of apathy toward my alma mater this evening.
The women’s basketball team kept it’s undefeated conference record alive and clinched the division title with a win over rival Kent State, so that was kind of cool. But when it comes down to it, for some reason it’s still women’s basketball to me. I’m thrilled that my school is succeeding and, honestly, kicking some tail in something, but that’s about it. Maybe it’ll be different when NCAA tourney time comes around, and I can see BG listed in a field of 64. I’m sure it will be exciting, like it was last year, but I don’t think it will cause me to take vacation days and whip out a flight schedule to get to any games. Congratulations to the Lady Falcons, though, regardless of how I feel.
Also today, the men’s basketball program announced that senior guard Steven Wright was leaving the team. This team is 9-17 on the year, and the last few games haven’t been pretty at all. The stat that has been conjured up today is that of the last 16 players recruited to play at Bowling Green, twelve have left the program before finishing their eligibility. (And none have done so to go pro. I just did the math in my head, and I don’t think that number is nearly correct.) It’s brought a usually continuing debate about the fate of head coach Dan Dakich to a boiling point, and I’m still not sure what to think of the whole situation. I think the Wright news today laid a pretty heavy brick in the pile against Dakich, but I’m still not sure about how much of the departure trouble from before that has been held against him is completely in his hands. In the end, it really was a feeling of apathy about the whole thing. A literal feeling of “Eh, another guy left. I guess we’ll have to replace him somehow.”
Which actually, the need to replace him may be a blessing in disguise, as a couple freshmen that have been seeing almost zero playing time and were marked as potential transfers. Getting forced into some game action for the last four or five games of the year may keep them around for next season.
Finally, I’m planning on a trip to BG tomorrow night for a hockey game. It’s mostly a make-up trip for one I made last October, when the game got postponed during the first intermission. That got it in my mind to get back to another BG game this season, and tomorrow is the last chance. It’ll be good to get up there, and an upset win over nationally-ranked rival Miami(OH) would set the Ice Arena into an uproar. If nothing else, I’ll get to see some friends and my folks and spend a little time in BG, which is always nice. For some reason, though, I just don’t have the usual giddyness flowing through me that I normally do on the eve of a trip back “home”.
I’m going up Sunday, and will be bringing back 8 orders of breadsticks. MMmmmmmm, Pollyeyes……
If BG does not fire Dakich then I will have to start firedakich.com. Seriously this guy needs to go.
I saw the icers last weekend tie Notre Dame. These kids have flashes of brilliance with flashes of craptacular nonsense. I hope they can beat the redskins I mean hawks, but I’m hoping next year they get some better flow and make a run at the top of college hockey.
Finally the womens team is really good and you know what else they are YOUNG! I believe they have 4 junior starters. Next year they could start the year in the top 25.
