Just when I was thinking of ways to start disliking Charlie Weis again, The Onion comes to my rescue!
Danny Gladstone, 8, a leukemia sufferer who is expected to live just long enough to see the Royals make a run at setting a franchise record for losses, arrived at Kauffman Stadium at 11 a.m., and was immediately swarmed by players excited to see someone else who wouldn’t be around in October.
I mean, really, does it get any more good and offensive than that?
As far as Buffalo Charlie goes, alot of coaches visit sick kids in the hospital. I’ll give him credit for droppin’ the ol’ yam bag on the table and throwing from his own end zone for the kid, but does it really get noticed if the kid lives through the weekend?
Anyway, onto the latest BlogPoll Roundtable question:
1. We are now 1/3 of the way through the season and things are starting to shake out. With that in mind, who are your picks to win each of the BCS conferences, as well as your choice for an at-large berth from a non-BCS league (none is an option)?
Mine are:
ACC: Virginia Tech. Duh.
Big 12: Texas. Double duh.
Big 10: Probably Ohio State, though there’s still the chance that Cheatypants will have a stroke one of these times the offense rolls up (GASP!) 250 yards of offense and he’ll pull the team back in it’s shell to lose to a Penn State team it has no business not beating like a redheaded mule.
Big East: Louisville. Hello wake-up call!
Pac 10: USC. I don’t know that Cal has the horses, and when everyone seems to think ASU is the biggest threat to the Trojan party this year and they’re still a 17-point dog, I don’t see anyone coming close for more than the 23 1/2 minutes Oregon did.
SEC: Florida. Florida. Florida. Then Florida. If I say it enough, hopefully I can jinx it. Or maybe Shelley Meyer will run off for a vacation to the Utah Riviera and not give Urbie the combination to the safe deposit box holding his testicles and he won’t have the fortitude at a key point in the game, instead kicking a field goal on third down with nine seconds left in the…. Hmmm… ya think Shelley might have a collection?
At-large: Nada. With Boise State and Bowling Green still wiping the stains out of their shorts, I don’t see it happening.
2. What team currently out of the Top 10 (AP or Coach’s, doesn’t really matter BlogPoll, please), has the best chance of ending up in the title game?
If Alabama wins out, it’s a no brainer. Notre Dame might make it if they run the table (which means USC takes a loss) and there are no undefeateds, or maybe if it’s just Texas with a perfect record. But that isn’t happening. ND will lose at least two, probably three more this season.
3. When you’re watching a game, what type of fan can you absolutely not tolerate being around?
So many answers, so little energy in my fingertips…
From this weekend (and granted it was an NFL game), I hate the people that have to be know-it-alls within earshot (especially right behind you). Even worse is when they’re wrong.
Two examples from the same guy:
-Cleveland TE catches a pass, stumbles, falls, gets up untouched and stumbles for five or six more yards. Guy behind me repeatedly yells, “He was down! He was down!” Uh, yeah.
-Indianapolis gets a first down with 1:25 left in the game. Cleveland calls its last timeout. Guy turns to his woman and says, “That’s it, they don’t need to snap it again.” Really, pal? How about you give me $20 each time they snap it before the end of the game, then?
I’ve seen other examples through the preliminary returns of the roundtable, but I don’t want to steal other’s answers. This time.
Bonus: A sizable portion of Michigan fandom is in full meltdown mode (myself especially). Some have chosen to sequester themselves for this weekend’s game against MSU to avoid scaring children, causing long-term psychological damage to those in the near vicinity, and most especially to avoid jail (I’m not saying this is me per se). Anyways, we need some help. Give us some ideas for replacements for LLLyd Carr (3 L’s for the number of losses per year, and no O this year either). Assistant coaches, head coaches elsewhere, etc. Please, give us something to look forward to.
Is Fielding Yost available?
