Use an open-faced club…

Today’s pile of irrelevance starts with a question (courtesy, once again, of AZZ.com).

“What is the best sandwich ever?”

To which this is one of the replies so far:

The best sandwhich ever was the USS Jed, at Jed’s which they no longer have on the menu.

It was a full chicken breast (both halves). It then had pepperoni, ham, turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonaise, and italian dressing on a ciabatta bread.

Um, yeah. I’m not big on the mayo or tomaters, but how I never ate one of those, I don’t know. From the same restaurant (a Northwest Ohio exclusive), I used to get a similar chicken sandwich, but with just melted American cheese and sauteed mushrooms, maybe some ranch dressing, and I thought that was terrific. Apparently, I was still missing out.

(For the record, I’m really, really not liking this new WordPress rich text business.)

The sandwich tales led me to do a little Googling for “mitch hedberg club sandwich”, trying to find a verbatim for his joke about club sandwiches. All I know is, the Wiki family is a godsend. Wikipedia and Wikiquote are the Google of the decade. (Remember when Google was kind of a secret? Or at least enough of a secret that pseudo-geeks like me knew about it, but not everyone and their god-forsaken sister?) Anyway, here’s Mitch. Though the printed word does him little justice. I suggest finding one or both of his CD’s and enjoying him that way.

Word came out today that “Baby Jessica” got married. (There’s that damn Wikipedia again!)

This story just gets more and more out there with each passing reference. First, it was “Oh yeah, I remember that chick.” Then, “Wow, and getting married at 19. Nice.” Followed by, “To a 32 year old.” This is the point where a co-worker of mine wondered if, as a 13 year old watching at home, this guy was telling family and friends, “Someday, I’m gonna marry me that well baby.”

And now finding out that the famous rescuer shot himself after what happened, and that she’s due a cool million in five or so years, this one just gets more messed up. Though that million dollar thing, when and if I have kids someday, you bet your ass there will be alot of random uncapped holes in my yard. I’ll call it my “Million Dollar Minefield”. Sure, the kid went through hell, and for all we know could still show physical and mental scars from the deal, but a million bucks!?!? Certainly, some of that has to be donated back to the fire department or the family of the guy that killed himself, right? Right!?!?

For the first time in a long time, it seems like the Hurricanes made a midseason move for a big name, trading to get Doug Weight from the Blues. A team that’s already scoring with the best in the league adds more firepower as well as a proven veteran. I like it.

Only part I’m really down on is losing young Mike Zigomanis. I really don’t know what he brought to the table hockey-wise, but that’s a hell of a fun name to have to part with.

Another random Google helped me discover Columbus Underground. I like Indy, but there are some parts of that site that had me yearning for Columbus again. Fortunately, I’ve already got at least two, maybe three or four planned trips out that way in the coming months, so I can fill that void a little bit then.

It also reminded me about how about two months after I moved, I was contacted about being in an column in the Columbus Dispatch about Columbus area blogs (or “personal websites”, as I continue to prefer to call them), but they didn’t want me since I didn’t live there anymore. With a Columbus-area cell phone number, it probably would have been simple to fake, as long as I didn’t do the interview while driving and bitch about the traffic on 465 or something too Indy-related.

  1. I had a reuben today just because of that discussion on azz.com

No one mentioned the sandwiches at the skanky East-Toledo-hoe-filled-smoke-pit on 795. Huh…. go figure.

  2. I don’t know if hamburgers are considered sandwiches, but the burgers at Thurman’s in German Village (Columbus) are more than just burgers. They are the ultimate sandwich burger.

    MMMMMmmmmm….. I’m drooling now.
