Even though it wasn’t a heckle, per se, Kurt and I pulled off one of the classic minor league baseball heckles of all time. (And while only about four people will care, I had to write this one up for posterity’s sake, and also, you gotta admit, it’s pretty damn cool.
Ottawa was in Indianapolis this week for a series with the Indians. Ottawa’s first baseman is Andy Tracy, a fellow Bowling Green alum. Sitting about 10 rows behind home plate, he came up in the seventh inning, and we break into the popular “BG-SU” chant (I yell “BG!”, Kurt yells “SU!”) Tracy promptly lines a single to center. Next time up, in the ninth, we take it a step further, and break out into a full two-man rendition of “Ay Ziggy Zoomba”, the unofficial, but way more fun to sing drunk, fight song of BG athletics. He draws a walk.
After the game, which turned out to be an exciting win for the Indians, with a game-winning two-run homer down the line in the ninth, Tracy is hanging out beside the dugout talking to friends, family, onlookers, whatever. We decide to go over and say hello, with Kurt yelling “GO BG!” from a section and a half down. Tracy stops what he’s doing, looks up with a smile and asks if we were the ones singing “Ay Ziggy Zoomba”. Um, of course we were. The best part comes when we mention that we were at BG at the same time he was, and he asked if we knew him in school. We said we didn’t think so, and he immediately puts his glove to the side of his face and whispers “We were probably so drunk all the time, who knows who we knew?” Awesome.
Unfortunately, Ottawa doesn’t make a trip back to Indy this year, unless they’d happen to meet up in the playoffs or something.
As cool as that part of the evening was, it also made us realize something. One day we needed to find enough people with the same sense of humor to join in. (Because believe me, the heckles weren’t all as tame as the friendly BG stuff, though they were tame enough as to not give the two-year old kid any ideas.) That, or we’ll just have to get a section full of strangers on board for the next “BG-SU!” chant at the ballyard.
Roll Along!!!
