As I was getting ready to head to work, I threw on the old Whalers jersey (well, actually a new Whalers jersey, but it’s about 11 years old), which somehow still fit, though it was a bit more snug than I rememeber…

On my way to work, flipping through the Sirius channels, I come across James Taylor singing “Carolina In My Mind”. Karma point 1.

On my way to dinner, some dillhole on ESPN Radio apparently has a new tradition of playing “Brass Bonanza” (the old Whalers “fight song”, or actually “goal song”) on days after Mighty Ducks wins. Such sacrilege! (Here’s where I get grief from the Whalers fans who are akin to my Browns fandom, in that rooting for Carolina is pure evil and I should rot for my sins. I mean, it’s not like I’m a Ravens fan…) Anyway, this guy on ESPN Radio (“The Sportsbash” or something gay and small town like that) plays the Bonanza, but drops duck calls over the first half of it and complains about “how dumb it sounds and how could it ever be a fight song sounding like that?” Dear sir… GFY.

I took that as a sign that I needed to watch the first period somewhere that wasn’t a 10″ monitor at work, so I hit a bar downtown and watched it. Educated a bartender on the history of the Whale/Canes (same bartender from a story that may or not have been posted here, but I know it was semi-sorta referenced here) and caught a 2-1 lead heading to the second. I got busy with work with it 3-2 heading to the third, saw NHL.com post a final in what would have been an inexplicably fast third period that really had eight minutes left, and the Canes held on for the win.

I also realized that I’m not as big a fan of Mike Emrick calling Dev-holes games as I thought, but he’s still a decent announcer. Canes go for the sweep (first in franchise history, but you didn’t hear that from me) Saturday on NBC.

(Editor’s note: Keep an eye on the djl zone for what could be an epic rant about the NHL’s broadcast planning. As much as I’m loving the full Carolina series on OLN and/or NBC right now, I feel his pain and think what they’re doing to the Buffalo series is borderline retarded.

As if there was any doubt, the Hurricanes went up 3-0 in their series with the Devils tonight, in much less dramatic, but still very satisfying, fashion than their Game 2 win.
