..."Wake up the damned Bambino."
Wow! The Red Sox are World Champions of the World. I can't believe that it finally happened. I can't claim to have suffered 86 years, because it's only been 14. I wasn't a Sox fan in '86 because I was eight years old and still under the brainwashing of my Indians fan father (56 years and counting for you sons of the feather) but I felt horrible for them after that series blew up in their faces. (By the way, don't blame Buckner. If Gedman blocks the previous pitch Ray Knight is still at first.) It was 1990 when I decided to become a Sox fan. Why? I don't know. I was just drawn to the team. Believe me, though, it has been a tough 14 years.
Last night I sat alone with the game and a six of High Life tall boys waiting. After Damon put the 2-1 pitch into the Cards bullpen I knew it was time. I watched the game with many different thoughts in my head.
1. If Jason Marquis a) is such a good sinker-ball pitcher, and b) can get away with that much grease on his hat, why can he not get the ball to drop?
2. Why is Tony LaRussa leaving Marquis in so long?
3. If I get picked up for streaking, will it just be a fine or is there jail time involved?
Then when Foulke fielded that last ground ball I sank to my knees and sat stunned. I cracked that last High Life and found myself crying. I think it was more out of respect for those who lived with this team much longer than I have rather than for my own 14 years.
And, for all of Fox's terrible broadcasts (no shit, every time a team has never trailed in a series they swept their opponents. God, Tim McCarver needs kicked.) they got it right. They showed the frame from the beginning of "Cheers" with the guy holding the "We Win" headline, and gave us Neil. Truly have "good times never seemed so good."
